Education minister Elizabeth Truss to travel to Shanghai to find out secrets behind maths success

The article was written by Allison Kersaw, and it was published for ‘The Independent’ on the 18th of February 2014.

The article states that education minister Elizabeth Truss wants to find out why China is doing way better at maths than the UK is. The productivity and growth in the UK is at threat because of this problem. Therefor, she has decided that she would go to China to find out what their teaching methods are and how we can improve in maths in the UK. The education minister has been set to travel to China for 3 weeks and will be accompanied by a handful of head teachers to help her with the situation on her trip. She said “At the moment our performance in maths is weakening our skills base and threatening our productivity and growth. I am determined to change this.”

In 2012, the UK Came 26th in math with an average of 494 in the PISA test which is an international math test.
Shangai is one of the top-performing parts of the world in maths, and they are way ahead of the UK when it comes to maths. Children of cleaners in Shanghai have higher maths scores than doctors and lawyers in the UK. Elizabeth Truss assumed that the biggest reason behind it was because they simply have a different philosophy, different feelings and thoughts towards maths. Other articles have confirmed that China is open for business. Shanghai teachers have arrived in the UK to raise the bar, and they are inviting UK teachers to come to Shanghai.
